In the film, Gone With the WindT Scarlett O'Hara's character was established early, in the famous barbecue scene at Twelve Oaks, T the plantation home of Ashley WilkesT. ScarlettT came to the barbecue intent on enjoying herself and, more importantly, winning Ashley'sT hand in marriage away from Melanie, his betrothed. While at the Wilkes' barbecue, Scarlett captivated every beau in attendance... Scarlett asked Ashley into the library where she proclaimed her vow of love to him. But Ashley was a man of honor and explained to Scarlett that he had been destined to marry from birth. Scarlett did not take rejection lightly, and she angrily threw a vase across the room. As it crashed against the opposite wall, a visitor from Charleston-the dashing and handsome Rhett Butler-arose from a nearby couch where he had been reclining out of sight. He crossed the room and greeted the astonished Scarlett O'Hara, complimenting her on a dramatic performance. Rhett was amused by Scarlett's vivacity and passion. He immediately became the third part of Scarlett's love triangle- shrewdly pursuing her as she had pursued Ashley. Scarlett O'Hara's fiery spirit and childlike innocence are most often remembered from the Twelve Oaks barbecue. The stunning pale green gown Scarlett wore, distinctly off the shoulders with the wide brimmed bonnet, beautifully reflected the deep green of her smoldering eyes and is one of the gowns she wore early in the film in which her beauty and spirit are best revealed.
